As far as their types are concerned, there are predominantly two types of reducers used in piping systems: Concentric Reducers and Eccentric Reducers.

Concentric Reducers is a conical shape reducer that provides a step-by-step transition between the larger and the smaller pipe. Since the taper is uniform, you get an even flow. The turbulence is minimal in this case, and so is the flow loss.

If the application is such that the pipes remain horizontal, then it is especially useful. Some examples are pumping systems or pipelines that carry liquids.

Due to their symmetrical shape, these reducers maintain the centerline and they balance the hydraulic force equally.

Eccentric Reducers has an edge that is parallel to the pipeline, providing an offset taper. This type of reducer is especially beneficial when you have to deal with horizontal flows of gases or slurries.

It keeps the bottom of the pipeline horizontally aligned. These reducers prevent air pockets and allow a smooth and undisrupted flow of fluids with low viscosity or in vent systems.

Key considerations for choosing the right reducer material

Compatibility of pipe size

You should ensure reducer material, fits the specific pipe sizes in your system. When there is misalignment, it may lead to pressure drops and turbulence. Ultimately it causes system failure. It is important to measure the inner and outer diameters of the pipe.  Precise measurements help in avoiding unnecessary adjustments or additional fittings.

Requirements of the flow

You need to analyze another critical aspect, which is flow requirement. The type of fluid or gas, pressure, and velocity need to be considered to determine the appropriate reducer type.

If the flow rate is high, you may need a concentric reducer. They avoid cavitation and ensure smooth fluid transition without air entrapment.

Compatibility of material with fluid or gas

If the process needs low-pressure water transport, then you may use a plastic reducer.

Similarly, the chemical properties of the fluid also decide the type of material. Some examples of these properties are pH level, temperature, and potential for corrosion.
